We'd tend the yard, when I was just a child
Chopped bamboo that grew indignantly from barren city ground
the looper sliced it up but it grew back out like the plague
and the Hague would be full from the crimes we committed against those weeds in this summer's heat

The sun was shining on a deck browning with age
Groaning as steps grew heavier on our ever-stretching days

But it's just grass now
It's not our house, anymore
I still remember the sticky swelling
Of our old front door

Today inside me there's still a light,
but it doesn't shine [near] half as bright, as those days I was small and the world still new, not worse for the wear of it all

Now I hold on tightly, hands clench a desperate fist
upon the last winter candle, shining dim into the mist
of all the Meetings and the Mondays and the other M-named horrors
and I just want to run away out to the shore where

I learned how to swim like the wild, wild ocean waves
I miss those days, footsteps on wet sand
Don't know where they'll land
but the others already long, long gone
