Why have I done this,
This is my take on the round 2 spin tunes challenge which is to write a song in the perspective of a minor or supporting character. I have chosen the TV series Shameless and it is from the perspective of the ex-fiancée of Fiona Gallagher, Sean.
About the song,
Fiona is the oldest of 6 children. She has an alcoholic father and a bipolar mother who has abandoned the family and shows up unannounced whenever she likes. She has had to raise the kids herself whilst watching her dad drink himself to a death that never seems to happen.
Sean manages Patty's Pies diner where she works. He is a recovering junkie who has secretly been shooting up whilst they are together, but holds himself together well. It is his observations of the family, the parents mainly, that have taken everything from her but given nothing back.
About the music,
I have recently taken up piano and am currently working through the It's Never too Late to Play Piano by Pam Wedgewood (
www.amazon.co.uk/Never-Late-Play-Piano-Tutor/dp/0571520707) of which I am about 31% of the way through. It is my hope to be able to play like Ben Folds and have purchased a Songbook of his greatest hits as my incentive to keep learning. The song originally started out as a homage to his work, using distorted bass and keeping it simple with just bass, drums and piano. I don't think I quite managed the intensity but I like how it ended up. I think I did the vocals justice at least.
What have I done differently,
Firstly, I want to take this opportunity to thank the judges and participants that have been kind enough to provide constructive feedback. Hell, just listening to my music is a big plus for me.
What I felt my previous outing was lacking was content, which was picked up on by the judges. I felt very uncomfortable about talking about myself and subconsciously kept it pretty vague. I really wanted to focus on telling the listener about things they don't know and not going on about "My feelings!".
I also really liked Vom's cut back section in his round 1 track so I decided to pinch that idea at the end of this.
