about
My song, "Today," is a prequel to the Beatles' song "Yesterday," which was #1 in the Billboard charts in 1965. Wait a minute, you might be thinking, Today doesn't come before Yesterday, does it? Welp, in this case I guess it does. Life was such an easy game to play for our narrator, or so he thought. But he sure said something wrong. Credit to my friends Josh Franke and Laurie Lucachick for helping brainstorm the basic idea.
lyrics
Today is today, it’s the day I’ve been hopin and prayin for
Wow, the here and now, I got sunshine all over this heart of mine
It was only last week, that we said “I do”
Our friends were all there, and the family too
But it’s important to me
For the whole wide world to see
We had a big old party, but it’s not the same
So I signed us up for the Newlywed Game
And today is the day
we’re gonna play on live TV
Today is today, it’s the day I’ve been hopin and prayin for
Right, the spotlight, is shining down, excitement all around
First question: “What color are her eyes?”
I write down “blue,” but she looks surprised
I wonder what could she mean
And her glare is a bright green
Second question: “Which one of her friends
would you wanna date if you had the chance?”
And I say, “Obviously
I’ve got a crush on Emilyyyy”
Today is today, it’s the day I’ve been hopin and prayin for
Man, just like I planned, I’m a superstar, twice the man you are
And now that I’m living all my dreams out this stage
It’s time to make a small confession
I know that today will end, we’ll turn the calendar page
So I’m bothered by one simple question:
How will it feel tomorrow?
How will it feel tomorrow?
The lights come down, I can hear the applause
So we didn’t win the prize, that don’t matter because
Today is today,
All my troubles are miles away
Walk out to the car with a spring in my step
But somebody tells me, yo, she already left
I’m sure she just can’t wait
To get home and celebrate
Today is today, if only for a couple hours,
Whoa, gotta know, can it be this good tomorrow?
Tomorrow?
How will it feel tomorrow?
How will it feel tomorrow?
How will it feel?
