about

This song was inspired by the story of a song that Truth wanted to write many years ago. It described a relationship that could never quite get off the ground due to the ever-increasing distance between him and the object of his affection. Once neighbors, one moved away, they both went to school on opposite ends of the country, got jobs in different cities, and never could seem to end up in the same place. This song takes the idea and spins it out into the story. Like most stories, the end is more satisfactory than reality...

lyrics

I wake up at the witching hour
At once my thoughts belong to you
Between our windows, a view most dower
There is but one thing I can do

Crossing the familiar street
I’ll knock at last upon your door

When jobs and parents move away
And with them I must go as well
Though all my being longs to stay
I’ll ne’er forget the place you dwell

I’ll take the over crowded bus
To traipse by foot a mile more
Crossing the familiar street
To knock at last upon your door.

When beckoned by our education
Farther still we have to part
Yet at every spring vacation
I must follow home my heart

O’er the country I will fly
Touching down in hopes we meet
Take the over crowded bus
To traipse by foot a mile more
Crossing the familiar street
To knock at last upon your door.

If life and work and love were simple
I’d have moved home long ago
But jobs that pay off debts that cripple
Scant reside where love would grow

Climb aboard the jersey train
And make the trip without a fuss
O’er the country I will fly
Touching down in hopes we meet
And take the over crowded bus
To traipse by foot a mile more
Crossing the familiar street
To knock at last upon your door.

The witching hour’s memories
That linger in my mind
Create a joyous reverie
That conjures more in kind:

Of travel under fading starlight
Winking in the inky sky.
Climb aboard the jersey train
And make the trip without a fuss
O’er the country I will fly
Touching down in hopes we meet
And take the over crowded bus
To traipse by foot a mile more
Crossing the familiar street
To knock at last upon your door.

Finally as life is lead
Day by day into the grave
I rise in darkness from my bed
To seek the love I’ve always craved.

I’ll wake up at the witching hour
To take the taxi, small and plain,
And travel under fading starlight
Winking in the inky sky.
Climb aboard the jersey train
And make the trip without a fuss
O’er the country I will fly
Touching down in hopes we meet
And take the over crowded bus
To traipse by foot a mile more
Crossing the familiar street
To knock at last upon your door.

Finally the door is opened
Finally your face I see
The parting spell of past act’s broken
We are joined in reverie
