Jeff Walker - Solid Ground

about

The subject of boredom and the role it plays in human existence has been examined at length for centuries by scientists, philosophers and poets. It’s been blamed and credited, feared and loathed—the terror of the normal and all that. Is it possibly the root of all evil? Is it a necessary state from which action (good or bad) is inevitably triggered? Is it essential for achieving the fully contemplative state that gives rise to meaningful spiritual awareness and growth? Why does it ebb and flow, rise and fall, so serendipitously? Clueless, me. So instead of additional stupefyingly boring dialogue, a song:

lyrics

V1
She wakes up with an unexpected quiet in her brain
Such unfamiliar normalcy catches her off guard
Should be a gift, but it’s so terrifyingly mundane
What kind of girl lets boredom be even in the cards

V2
So far above the fray and looking for a cause
One that suits her loftiness, not boring in the least
Some existential threat no one else can yet perceive
She hungers for disruption in the belly of the beast

CH
But she’s read Heidegger and Kierkegaard
Though it may be hard to tell
When she comes down off that high horse
Solid ground will break the spell

V3
It’s sweltering outside but she’s rallying the troops
Gotta stick it to the man and call everyone’s attention
To the plight of the oppressed and indignantly protest
Against whatever others find much too frivolous to mention

CH
But she’s read Heidegger and Kierkegaard
And though she spurs it on like hell
If she comes down off that high horse
Solid ground will break the spell

BR
Boredom is a monster
That indiscriminately eats
When she offers it her heart
It takes her down into the streets
Where the sweet seductive lure of such a kick
Obscures the cold reality that it’s all a parlor trick

CH
She’s read Heidegger and Kierkegaard
So this may ring a little bell
When she comes down off that high horse
Solid ground will break the spell
