Stacking Theory - Slowly Disappear

It's spring. We've had a long weekend and a few sunny days strung together. The streets are lined with hard rubbish - folks everywhere are discarding the old and unused.

This is a song about letting things go. Sometimes that's good, sometimes not so good.

SpinTunes21R3 asked us to write about 2 seemingly unrelated things and connect them. The two things here are:
1. The things we throw out in hard waste (or hard rubbish, if you prefer).
2. Our hopes and dreams

The connection is that they all disappear.

we’re up early

the sun’s calling through the windows
because we fell asleep with the curtains open
that’s how it goes when the spring’s coming
we take a long walk
see what other folks are throwing out in their big clean

a dusty table
that was built for the days that we worshipped CRTs
a clean line defines where the screen used to be
but now no-one uses that dedicated seat

a broken bed frame
single mattress with a stain
i wonder how long it carried the weight
until it gave out, got replaced
did you upgrade
or did the children go
did they go and leave you empty in your nest
no need for anyone to lay down their head and rest here now

people throwing out
in hard waste
when i’m walking in my streets

times change
and we all give up on our dreams
and shed our skins
and then we slowly disappear

there's an old mate at the cafe
he's always there
i mean, where else would he go?
we stop, we have a chat, like good neighbours do
there’s a few minutes to spare when we’re waiting for the brew

we talk about the football
and how this year we both managed to avoid it all
i don't care for the pomp and the praise that is heaped on the kids
and the money these days

he stops to say he used to be okay
good enough to play
he had a mean left foot and a spatial awareness that was unsurpassed by any of his teammates
but he gave it all away
just wasn't strong enough to stay

but he still can’t escape the voices in his head that scream his name as he imagines himself orchestrating another winning play
