Jim Tyrrell - Salt

from SpinTunes 21 Round 3 by Spintunes

about

Here's what I've got for round 3. Working with a live recording as my base track.
The song is called Salt. It follows the lives of two men who diverge and return.

lyrics

When I was a young man I dreamt of the sea
Of sailing to far distant shores
I signed up to serve but it wasn’t to be
And I don’t dream of sailing no more

The local recruiter was Admiral Byrne
He looked down at me from the prow
He said “This young recruit may be eager to learn
But there’s not enough salt in him now.”

I took to the guitar and took to the road
A seaman of sorts on the land
With songs for the singing and tales to be told
I made my way by my own hand

We drifted apart and lived different lives
As distant as two men could be
He made orphans of children and widows of wives
And I just told tales of the sea

His ruthless behavior was surely well known
His exploits turned up in my songs
And in his position of Admiralty
He stayed shielded from all of his wrongs

Now many years later I came home to see
The old Admiral being interred
The gathering said “Jim you knew him back then
Couldn’t you say a few words?”

I said “Ladies and gentlemen, family and friends
It’s good to be back in this town;
With its green rolling hills and its towering trees
And its dreams that are somehow held down.

And so even the dreams of this old man must end
But take a good look at this ground
I promise you nothing will grow here again
There’s far too much salt in it now.”
