My partner and I moved from downtown Houston, Texas to a small town in Maine about a year ago. It's been an adventure to say the least, full of ups and downs, if you will. We've tried to find ways to appreciate remote living, and to immerse ourselves in the history and culture of this place. There are lots of little ways we give ourselves away as outsiders though - we don't know a thing about sailing, or tides, or exactly when to change our tires as winter approaches. We're learning though, and loving every day.

Evenings in late October
When the tide was just right
We’d go walk along the breakwater
And freeze in the waning light

But arm in arm together
And turning from the spray
If we made it to that lighthouse
We knew we’d be ok

Hearts full like a sail
We’re hauling up everyday
Like the boats that fall and rise
On Penobscot Bay

When the snows come in November
And the sun comes up at four
We’ll chop wood and play some songs
Drink til we’re not sore

We’ll go up to Camden harbor
And count the lobster pots
When the snowbirds have all cleared out
With their two-wheel drives and yachts
