"Ode to Marcel'
an opus in 17 parts
by
Boffo Yux Dudes

This song is inspired by Jon Cage's '4:33' and also his art installation - a series of eight “plexigrams” collectively titled “Not Wanting to Say Anything about Marcel,” to honor his good friend and fellow artist Marcel Duchamp who had died in 1968. The title refers to a comment Jasper Johns made to Cage when artists were encouraged to respond in memoriam to Duchamp's death. Johns said, in effect, I don't want to say anything, and Cage used this for his title.

'4:33' has had books dedicated to Cage's dedication and experimental nature of things. It's not just a recording of silence. It's a feeling of what musicians are about to perform, with shuffing in their seats, adjustments of the instrumentation, and room tone including an audience. It's a homage to the anticipation of music about to be performed.
Our rendition should be complete with bodily sounds, occasional passing traffic and snarky neighbors, and the shuffling of first and second draft scripts of 'Naked and Afraid' over a cool summer breezeway.

It should be played with gusto in arpeggio style using common household items.
