about

One of my favorite hobbies is overthinking Disney movies - spinning tiny plot holes and minor details into sprawling backstories and insane theories. In that tradition, here is the story of Snow White, told from the perspective of the queen’s magic mirror. My wife found a wiki article that laid out a very compelling character that the movie doesn’t really explore at all - how the spirit in the mirror is not intentionally evil, but is bound to serve the mirror’s owner, and is enchanted to always tell the truth. None of the stuff that happens was his idea, but he had to watch it all go down, appearing as though he was a willing, active participant. That struck me as tragic.

The part that I found most interesting was the part I never gave much thought to before this song: what happens to the mirror after the story is over? The queen is dead, and as far as we know there was nobody to take the throne after she was gone… Was the spirit in the mirror freed when the queen died? Or was he trapped there, alone in an empty castle, never knowing for certain what happened to Snow White or the queen?

So, this song attempts to explore some of those issues and answer some of those questions. I suppose it’s more of a musical theater character song than a pop tune, but I stand by it. I hope you like what you hear.

lyrics

Here she comes again
Every night, the same old question.
“The fairest in the land?”
She’s lost inside her own reflection.

She used to ask for more…
I swear, she didn’t used to be this shallow.
That only came with years
Of nursing her regrets and shadows...

From here on the wall,
I saw it all
All so clear...
The lines on her face,
The pain and the fear.
Year after year…

And then there was the girl…
I never caught her name or story.
I only saw her face…
I have to tell the truth. I’m sorry.

If only I had known
What telling you the truth would lead to…
The huntsman brought her heart.
I swear to you, I didn’t mean to…

From here on the wall,
I saw it all.
Oh my God…
What have I done?

Again, you asked your question,
Knowing well I could not lie.
I reached out for your answer,
And it took me by surprise.
My relief was met with anger
When I said the girl survived.
You stormed off to find the truth,
And left me far behind…

And now I’m all alone.
The empty rooms are dark and quiet.
A castle of neglect,
With no one to reflect…

I wish that I was brave.
Maybe I could ask myself the question.
I don’t know where you’d go,
But I’m afraid to know.

From here on the wall,
I’ll watch it all
And all through the years,
I will be here,
Until you come home…
