about
Not formally trained in music, so I had to look this one up. Worked on a few other ideas that turned out to not fit the challenge, so I decided that simplicity was best. The whole project is essentially experimental.
Lyrics: I decided that, since this wasn't a lyrical challenge, I could just follow a loose stream of consciousness. This was enhanced by the fact that I caught my son's cold and was on NyQuill while writing. There is no repetition, no chorus - I won't bother to explain them. They aren't that complex, and can probably apply to any number of themes.
Music: The song begins in Em (one sharp), then shifts up a third to C major (no sharps or flats). I simply fluctuated back and forth a couple of times. I just wanted to meet the challenge.
I intended to write lyrics for the final part in C, but ended up just filling it with an instrumental coda. My guitar skills are mediocre at best, and I'm not used to doing as much lead riffs. I like them, but a seasoned musician would give them more flavor. I also toyed with the balance, but was tentative to get too bold.
Vocals: The hardest part was mixing the vocals - I went back and forth between emphasizing the high notes, then the lows (which I'm not crazy about - I can belt high notes with a cold, but low notes tend to be flat, stuffy and inconsistent). I think I found a reasonable balance, though like most of my songs, I'm not crazy about the overall outcome.
lyrics
In the middle of a drift asunder
She crash down to the bottom
Every other thing fabricated
Every little thing burns in the corner
This too shall pass, it always does
It cannot last
I’ll burn it up
Fearless trip, a trip
I’m gonna settle in the pit of my anger
I can’t take much more of this
Get a little bit, gone a little bit mad
Once I find my head again
Gonna get a bit of salvation
It’s hardly worth the wait to forget it
Gonna drink and choke till I fall down
Try to claw my way back to the sun
But I get back up
Gonna find a reason
They say the lower the road
Then the bleaker the season
Nothing will make it right again
Nothing will take away what was said
Lie me down in the meadow
Lie me down in the meadow again
Wide awake in the meadow
