In the French Netflix series ‘Lupin’ (2021), Babakar Diop was a Senegalese immigrant to France. A single parent to his son Assane, Babakar worked as a chauffeur to the wealthy Pellegrini family. Although Mrs Pellegrini considered him a gentleman, Babakar was nonetheless wrongly accused of stealing a valuable necklace and ended up imprisoned for the crime. On the day that young Assane came to visit him in prison, Babakar was found hanged in his cell.

‘Au Revoir, Mon Fils’ is imagined as Babakar’s soliloque mélancolique for his soon-to-be orphaned son.
