And now, a brief word of thanks:

This is my first Spintunes contest, and I am blown away by the effort put forth by the judges here. The reviews are an embarrassment of riches; thorough, thoughtful, and seriously constructive. I am so grateful to have been able to participate.

A cardinal is singing just outside the window pane
Unseen crows are offering a murderous refrain
High above America’s demented retail dream
where Christmastime increasingly resembles Halloween

Each marquee proclaims potential economic bliss
Songbirds make their nests, completely unaware of this
Surely such a grievous opportunity to miss
All life’s desire set afire by shopping’s sacred kiss

Love affairs with billionaires who don’t know how to stop
Lacking moral compasses but heading toward the top
Uncontrolled desires destroying undeveloped woods
Building malls designed to fall, closing up for good

Leaving empty storefronts, gaudy desecrated tombs
Eventually refashioned into multipurpose rooms
Accommodating congregating drunk conventioneers
Collecting plastic relics from diminishing careers

Or Funerals as hipsters suffer first world problem deaths
Choking on pistachios, vaping final breaths
Suspendered and mustachioed, a corpse in perfect health
Wondering did he ever even once look like himself

Evening drapes its sheet over our animal parade
Bedside clocks serve summons to the promises they made
sometime long after midnight a voicemail goes unheard:
“Report to Human Resources - we hope to have a word.”
